# Slack

> Connect a Slack channel, public or private, what you can post, and what happens when you disconnect.

A Slack connection is one **channel** in one Slack team, not the whole team. Connect the channel you want Ocoya to post in; connect again for a second channel. Public and private channels both work.

## Before you start

You need to be allowed to add apps to your Slack team. Many teams let any member do that. Others ask an admin to approve new apps first, and Slack tells you so when you connect.

To connect a **private** channel, you have to be a member of it. Slack only lists the private channels you're in.

## Connect Slack

    Pick **Slack** from the **Add a connection** panel. It's under Community, below Discord.

    Slack asks which team to add Ocoya to, and which channel it should post in. Both choices happen on Slack's own screen.

    Approve the request. The channel appears on your Channels page as **#channel-name**, with your Slack team's name beside it.

Slack shows "App is not approved by Slack" on that screen. That only means Ocoya isn't listed in the Slack Marketplace yet. It doesn't stop the app working.

## Private channels

An app can't join a private channel by itself, so when you pick one, Ocoya uses your permission once to add itself to it. That's why Slack's screen also asks to manage private channels you're in. Ocoya gives that permission back straight away and never keeps it.

If your Slack team doesn't allow members to add apps to channels, the channel still connects and Ocoya warns you: "Ocoya could not add itself to that channel". Type `/invite @Ocoya` in the channel before your first post.

## How posts appear

Posts arrive from the **Ocoya** app, not from your personal Slack account. Links unfurl the way they do when anyone pastes one.

Ocoya never pings `@channel`, `@here` or anyone else, even if your caption contains those words.

## What you can post

Files are shared in one message, with your text above them. A link card only shows on posts without files.

## Slack's limits

## Disconnecting

Disconnecting the channel in Ocoya stops Ocoya posting there. When you disconnect the last Ocoya channel from a Slack team, Ocoya also removes itself from that team.

Removing the Ocoya app from Slack's **Apps** page instead disconnects every channel from that team at once. They show **Reconnect needed** on your Channels page.

## Common problems

**"The Ocoya app is not in this private Slack channel."** Ocoya couldn't add itself when you connected. Type `/invite @Ocoya` in the channel and retry the post, or reconnect the channel.

**"The Ocoya app was removed from this Slack…"** Someone removed Ocoya on Slack's side. Reconnect the channel — see [Reconnect a channel](/help/reconnect-a-channel).

**"This Slack channel is archived."** Unarchive it in Slack, or connect a different channel.

**"Slack asks for an admin's approval."** Your Slack team restricts new apps. Ask a Slack admin to approve Ocoya, then connect again.

**"Install Ocoya into one Slack team inside your Enterprise Grid…"** You picked a whole Enterprise Grid organization. Pick one team inside it instead.
