Edit an image with AI in Studio

Studio can change the contents of an image, not just crop and filter it. Four tools, each for a different problem.

Erase

Erase parts of your image by painting over them

Paint over what you want gone and Studio fills in what should have been behind it. Use it for a stray object, a sign, a person at the edge of a shot. It works best on simple, continuous backgrounds — sky, a wall, grass. Something removed from in front of a detailed pattern is harder, and you’ll see it.

Extend

Extend your images to fit your design needs

Grows the image outward, inventing what sits beyond the original frame. This is the fix when a photo is the wrong shape for the canvas — a landscape shot that needs to be a story, for instance — and cropping would lose the subject. Extending a little is reliable. Extending a lot invents a lot, and the further it goes the more likely it looks invented.

Inpaint

Replace a painted area with something you describe, rather than just removing it. Paint the region, say what should be there instead. Erase removes; inpaint substitutes. If you want a plain surface where an object was, erase is the better tool.

Remove background

Remove background from your images

Cuts the subject out and drops everything behind it — the thing you want for a product on a coloured panel, or a person over a brand background. Clean edges depend on the subject. A product with a defined outline cuts out well; hair and anything semi-transparent are where it struggles.

Working with them

Each tool opens with Done and Cancel in the toolbar, so you can try something and back out without touching the original. Two habits worth having:

• Work on a duplicate of the image layer when you’re doing something drastic, so the original stays on the canvas.
• Check it at full size. Generated fills often look fine small and obviously wrong when someone views the post properly.

When to fix the source instead

AI editing is for salvaging an image you already have. If you’re doing heavy work on every photo, the cheaper fix is usually further upstream — a better original, or generating an image built for the shape you need.
